Boat Name: Flapper
Sail: N 71, D 60
Year Built: 1939
Designer: Christian Jensen
Builder: Anker & Jensen
History: N 71 Flapper was built in Norway just prior to the outbreak of World War II. Later sold to Denmark, she was the alternate for that country’s 6 meter entry in the 1948 Olympics. Flapper made her way to Maine in the early 50’s, but never took part in the post-war six meter scene on Long Island Sound or on Lake Ontario. She was used as a cruiser for a little while, but has now been returned to racing trim and continues to race everywhere and anywhere there’s good competition. The below vintage photo shows Flapper sailing off the coast of Norway in some post WWII class racing. Flapper’s restoration at Brion Rieff’s shop was completed in mid-2007 and Nick Booth and team have been “on the road” with Flapper ever since. Flapper received some further repair and fine tuning at Lars Guck’s shop and came 8th of 45 at the massive 2011 Worlds at Helsinki. Flapper and crew were dominant at the 2013 Robbe & Berking sponsored 6mR World Championships in Flensburg, Germany, and held an 11 point lead going into the last race, but narrowly missed winning the regatta in a difficult “lottery” last race held in very light air.
Some highlights include:
2013 World Championships in Flensburg, Germany – 2nd of 23.
2015 World Championships La Trinite sur Mer, France – 5th of 23.
2016 European Championships in Brunnen, Switzerland – 4th of 16.
